The L AList

Almost anyone who knows me, knows that visiting me means receiving the grand culinary tour of whatever city they happen to find me in. Whether it be here in LA, home in NY, abroad in Prague or somewhere in Amsterdam, if I'm landing there, I'm eating there. But with the culinary writing sphere already abuzz with "tops lists" for every occasion, it feels almost crude to post anything so literarily debased here in the realm of poetic foodie fodder. And yet.

TO DRINK

Sunset Beer Co

With one of the best happy hours in Los Angeles, the Sunset Beer Co tasting room offers an extensive array of globally and locally acquired beers and wines at wholesale prices. A small cast and crew, this local hot spot is so much more than a bar and has flourished solely out of Echo Park for almost a decade; it doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon. Join them for the happiest of hours, 4 - 7, M -Th and skip their $2/drink corkage fee.

The Spare Room

Notorious for its massive tropical Punch Bowls, this bar offers the beautiful marriage of both exquisite spirits dressed up with inspired titles, and the communal fun of a two lane bowling ally. The bartenders flirt with gastronomy while table side board and card games ensue in the intimate and slightly romantic gem, tucked in the Roosevelt Hotel.

TO EAT

Desanos

Los Angles outdoes itself with some of the best pizza west of NYC. With their authentic imported Italian ingredients, warehouse/camp cabin style mess hall, exposed brick ovens, and signature “8 pointed star” Napoli pizza option, this lone ranger puts Little Armenia on the map. This place covers all its basis from sports coverage on a few inconspicuous TV's, to its BYOB policy.

San Pedro Fish Market

For a chance to experience the freshness of the historic Los Angeles port of San Pedro, one must go to the Fish Market. Owned and operated by 3rd generation family entrepreneurs, this essential large scale operation has been letting you choose your own seafood to be gilled or fried, fish monger style, since 1956. Heaping portions served on a communal lunch tray with the signature combo (potatoes, onions, garlic bread and epic Micheladas) plus the roaming mariachi band, there’s hardly any place like it on the docks.

Mr. Fries Man

In a town where many people wont ever make it south of Pico, down in Gardena resides Mr. Fries Man. A black owned establishment, the entrepreneur Craig Batiste, is an urban pillar who built his concept of fresh seafood and meat toppings on bomb fries, into a community staple.

Gjusta

This female owned cornerstone sits right off of the Venice boardwalk and across from the fabled first Gold’s Gym. With some of the best bread in the county, Gjusta’s large team of bread bakers, cooks, and pastry chefs come together to create a one of a kind, East Coast meets Mediterranean deli experience. There’s imported cheeses, curated charcuteries, and cured seafood, all locally sourced and served open kitchen style since 2014. Gjusta boasts to sourcing from only 5 markets to meet its high demand operations.

Bohemian House of Espresso + Chai

Independently owned and operated by DTLA’s very own “Blackie” Boho, this dig offers exotic options like date seed lattes and camel milk alongside its other popular café items. Always in attendance, Blackie adorns every table with an edition of his self published book of phone repellent conversation starters, and always makes sure to give every guest a personal welcome and check up during their dine in stay. The matrix meets jungle nouveau interior is oddly a perfect environment for laptop work, quiet conversation, and people watching in the heart of LA.

TO DESSERT

Magpies

This vegan haven is a couple owned creamery based in Silverlake, and is the brainchild of Rose and Warren. Rose, merging her Korean American heritage with husband Warren’s Cali classics, came up with the concept of “story telling” ice cream that exhibits seasonal ingredients from around the world. A secret LA celebrity favorite, Magpies has created a unique cashew nut base that makes its ice cream almost indistinguishable from its dairy based counter part. Peep their weekly & daily flavor updates on IG and get up on their loyalty program, because you will be back.
